Though Ganoderma Lucidum has no direct anti-hepatic virus effect, its immuno-regulation and liver protection characteristics aid in treatment for viral hepatitis along with the drugs.
In the 1970s, China began to use Ganoderma Lucidum for treatment of viral hepatitis. A comprehensive clinical report indicated that the total effective rate ranged from 73.1% to 97%. The best curing rate including the clinical curing rate was 44%-76.5%. Indication of a cure included: (a) reduction or disappearance of the subjective symptoms, such as fatigue, lack of appetite, abdominal distension and pain in hepatic distension and pain in hepatic area; (b) normalization or lowering of the liver function tests, such as serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT); and (c) disappearance or reduction of liver and /or spleen swelling. In general, the therapeutic effect of Ganoderma Lucidum is more pronounced in acute hepatitis than in chronic or persistent hepatitis. Clinically, administration of Ganoderma Lucidum can prevent or reduce drug- induced liver damage . Ganoderma Lucidum’s liver-protective effect is expressed as “support qi of the liver and the spleen” by TCM.
