The 10th International Medical Mushroom Conference

The 10th International Medicinal Mushroom Conference, which enjoys the reputation of the "Olympic Games of Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms", was held in Nantong, Jiangsu Province from September 19 to 22, 2019. More than a thousand representatives from 43 countries and regions around the world gathered together to exchange the latest research results and forward-looking industry insights around the theme of “Medicinal Mushroom Science: Innovations and Challenges”.

The IMMC is one of the largest professional platforms for international experts, scholars and insiders in the edible-medicinal fungi industry. In 1999, Begell House published the "International Journal of Medicinal Mushroom", which opened a new milestone for the research and industrialization of medicinal mushroom. In 2001, the first International Conference on Medicinal Mushroom was held in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Since then, the conference has been held every two years. The tenth conference was held in China for the third time after the fifth in 2009 and the seventh in 2013.

Most of the medicinal fungi are edible fungi. The medicinal fungi can be used as foods because they contain pharmacological activities and functional ingredients. They can be further used as health supplements and have the potential to be developed into medicines. Although there are more than 700 kinds of medical fungi, from the contents of more than 160 speeches and reports in this conference, Ganoderma lucidum is still the most concerned medicinal fungus in the eyes of scholars.

Yao Weixi, Chief Expert of the R&D center of GANOHERB, shared his exploration on the feasibility of using supercritical COto extract triterpenes and sterols from Ganoderma lucidum at ultra-high pressure in the report time of 30 minutes.  


As a researcher at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yao Weixi was one of the few experts specializing in supercritical CO2 extraction technology in China. After joining GANOHERB’s R&D team 10 years ago, the patented technology developed by him uses graded depressurization and fractional collection to separate oil and impurities on the same production line, which greatly improves the purity and efficacy of extracting the spore oil and helps achieve GANOHERB's goal of making high-quality spore oil.



Now, Yao Weixi hopes to further apply supercritical CO2 extraction technology to the extraction of triterpenes and sterols from Ganoderma lucidum, hoping to obtain higher quality triterpenes and sterols of Ganoderma lucidum. Since Ganoderma lucidum triterpenes and Ganoderma lucidum sterols are non-fat-soluble substances with low polarity, higher extraction pressure must be given to increase the density of CO2, thus improving the solubility of CO2, in order to dissolve the triterpenes and sterols in Ganoderma lucidum in large quantities. 


However, there is no such ultra-high pressure supercritical CO2 extraction equipment in China, so GANOHERB cooperated with German operators to extract triterpenes and sterols from Reishi mushroom. The results showed that:

The supercritical CO2 extraction technology can obtain more kinds and higher content of triterpenes and sterols of Ganoderma lucidum than the currently commonly used alcohol extraction technology. Moreover, the extraction pressure will also affect the extraction results -- the higher the extraction pressure, the more kinds and the total amount of triterpenes and sterols of Ganoderma lucidum extracted, and the more tumor growth can be inhibited.


Cell experiments showed that the supercritical CO2 extraction technology could obtain Ganoderma lucidum triterpenes and sterols with more anti-cancer activity than the commonly used alcohol extraction technology. In addition, Ganoderma lucidum triterpenes and sterols obtained by supercritical CO2 at different extraction pressures also have different anticancer activities. In principle, the higher the pressure, the better the effect.

  


Animal experiments have also proved that the triterpenoids and sterols extracted from Ganoderma lucidum with supercritical COat 85Mpa can inhibit tumor growth more effectively than the Ganoderma lucidum alcohol extract.

 

The research of Yao Weixi's team shows that the same raw materials of Reishi mushroom can indeed obtain more ingredients with higher activity through better technologies. However, due to the high production cost, it is still difficult to extract Ganoderma lucidum triterpenes and sterols with supercritical CO2 at ultra-high pressures.

Yao Weixi said in an interview after the report that not all research and development work will eventually be realized in the industry. Maybe in ten or twenty times of research and development work, only one time of work can be applied to the industry, but if we don't do any research and development work, we will never make even one innovation or one progress.

On the 10th International Medical Mushroom Conference, the 297th Chinese Engineering Science and Technology Forum –  Forum on Fungi and Massive Health Industry was held simultaneously by Chinese Academy of Engineering. Sun Xiaobo,  the director of Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, is one of the invited guests.
